Archaeological zone of Bandurria, corresponding to the late Archaic Period, with an antiquity of 5000 years before the present. It covers an area of approximately 23 hectares and is located 10 km. south of the city of Huacho.

Bandurria was discovered in 1973 as a result of the destruction of the eastern side of the site by waters from the Santa Rosa irrigation. Eng. Domingo Torero was its discoverer when he realized that the waters were destroying an archaeological site and began a rescue of the archaeological material with the help of students from the University of Huacho and residents. In this rescue a large number of burials were recovered. The human remains were wrapped in bundles of mats and fabrics intertwined with large stones on top.

Recent findings from Bandurria have uncovered an area of monumental architecture made up of nine mounds: four main and five minor. These findings reaffirm the north-central region of Peru as the cradle of the oldest civilization in America.

The name of the site comes from the bandurria bird; Before 1973 the area was known as Pampa de las Bandurrias. At present this bird has disappeared from the area.

The archaeological site of Bandurria is located in the district of Huacho, province of Huaura, Department of Lima in Peru, in the area called Playa Chica at kilometer 141 of the North Pan-American Highway.

Bandurria is the oldest archaeological site in Peru with 5000 years, according to archaeologist Alejandro Chu Barrera.

The archaeological site of Bandurria, in the province of Huaura (Lima), is considered the cradle of the oldest civilization in America, assured archaeologist Alejandro Chu Barrera, director of the Bandurria Archaeological Project.

"Various radiocarbon dates made in the United States confirmed that Bandurria is 3,200 years before Christ, while Caral is 2,900", said the archaeologist.

The specialist pointed out that the main reason for the emergence of highly organized societies on the coast was the availability of marine resources that served to improve the diet of the local population.
