West Yellowstone is a town in Gallatin County, Montana, adjacent to Yellowstone National Park. The population was 1,271 at the 2010 census. The town is served by Yellowstone Airport. It is part of the Bozeman, MT Micropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded in June 1908 when the Oregon Short Line Railroad was completed. The town's name changed several times until West Yellowstone was settled upon in 1920.[2]

For many, the town of West Yellowstone is a place to stay while traveling through Yellowstone National Park. The town is separated into two parts, residential and commercial, roughly at the road D Parkway. South of D Parkway (Alley) is mainly a business area; north of it is an area of homes and apartments. The area north of D Parkway is known to locals as the "Madison Addition". The town has one school, serving kindergarten through 12th grade.

The Grizzly Discovery Center
The Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center is a fantastic wildlife center that features wolf, grizzly, and raptor enclosures. The center offers a full schedule of events throughout the day including feedings, movies, and educational programs.

Harriman State Park
At Harriman State Park visitors enjoy a wide array of activities and sights that will please the whole family, from touring of historic buildings to hiking through rich wildlife habitat.
Harriman State Park Idaho lies in a 16,000-acre wildlife reserve and is part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. This beautiful sanctuary protects multitudes of birds and mammals.

Hebgen Lake
The recreation area of Hebgen Lake is one of spectacular scenery, camping, boating, fishing and other water-based activities as well as snowmobiling and ice-fishing in winter.
Hebgen Lake is a lovely recreation area filled with spectacular scenery and a wide array of water activities. This man-made lake is about 15 miles long and 2 1/2 miles wide, providing an ideal vacation spot not far from Yellowstone National Park.

Henry's Lake State Park
Surrounded by Targhee National Forest, Henry’s Lake State Park offers visitors the best of views, premiere outdoor recreation and a wonderful vacation destination for the whole family.
Only a few miles west of Yellowstone National Park, Henry’s Lake State Park has 10,000-foot peaks as a backdrop and an awesome mountain lake for water sports in the Idaho wilderness.

The IMAX Theatre
If you have an extra hour to spare in West Yellowstone, head on down to the IMAX for an educational film on Yellowstone, wildlife, or other interesting topics.
Sit back and relax in the large IMAX theater. Most films are under an hour and kid friendly. It's a great activity for a hot afternoon or in between other West Yellowstone attractions.

Historic mining town of Virginia City
Virginia City, Montana is an excellently preserved ghost town, offering visitors the ability to move back in time to the Old West and experience the feel of a mining camp.
Historic Virginia City, Montana is a colorful pioneer mining camp that has been preserved since the late 1800s, now a National Historic Landmark and open air museum.
Virginia City is in the Rocky Mountains of southwest Montana, only 85 miles west of West Yellowstone, Montana on Highway 287.

At almost 7,000 feet above sea level and almost exactly halfway between the equator and north pole, West Yellowstone experiences a subarctic climate (Köppen climate classification Dfc) with cold, sometimes bitterly cold winters, and brief but generally warm summers. During summer, the average low is 41 °F (5 °C) and the average high is 78 °F (26 °C). During the winter, the average low is 1 °F (−17 °C), and the average high is 24 °F (−4 °C).[9] West Yellowstone also holds the record low for the lower 48 of any community at −66 °F (−54 °C), although Rogers Pass, Montana is colder, at −70 °F (−57 °C), however, the December record low of −59 °F (−51 °C) is the monthly record low for the lower 48.
