At this moment the process of legal classification of cultural heritage built by the Portuguese Institute of Architectural Heritage takes place.
In Monchique.
It is thought that this castle was built in the tenth or eleventh century by the Muslims and served as a military refuge to support the Castle of Silves. Today there are only a few walls and a cistern, hidden in the middle of vegetation and among cork-trees. This site has already been the target of archaeological excavations, with the purpose of proceeding to date the archaeological site "Cerro do Castelo de Alferce".
