The Museum of Archeology and Ethnology of the University of São Paulo (MAE-USP) is an institution dedicated to research, teaching and cultural and scientific diffusion, linked to the Dean of Culture and University Extension of the University of São Paulo. It was created in 1989, from the dismemberment of the archeology and ethnology sectors of the Paulista Museum, to which were merged the collections of the USP Prehistory Institute, the former FFLCH's namesake museum and the Plínio Ayrosa Collection. It is located in the University City, in São Paulo.
The museum has one of the largest collections of archaeological artifacts in Brazil, formed by field collections, excavations, shopping, barter, lending and donations, accumulated since the late nineteenth century. It consists of approximately 1,500,000 pieces, referring to the civilizations of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, pre-Hispanic archeology and, above all, Brazilian prehistory. The ethnographic collection covers pieces relating to African and Afro-Brazilian populations and indigenous peoples of Brazil. It also has a vast library, with about 60 thousand volumes, including books, catalogs, theses, periodicals and rare works.
