Its history and architecture motivated its declaration as a National Monument. At the dawn of Medellín, the Basilica was its main church; It even became the Cathedral. Right in the historic center of the city, in front of it, is the also traditional Berrío Park, where the main Metropolitan Train station is located.

The current appearance of the church of La Candelaria dates from 1767, but in the same place there were other churches from 1649. Built in colonial times, it has neoclassical architecture and exhibits works of religious art, such as the canvas of the Virgen de la Candelaria, belonging to the most typical colonial style.
