The castle of Leiria was built by D. Afonso Henriques as a way of establishing a defensive line against the Arabs, but his wars with Galicia made the Arabs take advantage of the displacement of the armies of the Portucalense County to the north, twice, managed to seize Leiria.
In 1142, after regaining definitive Leiria, D. Afonso Henriques, had reinforced the defenses of the castle and D. Sancho I, about 1195, had erected the walls of the city.
The importance of this city was growing, becoming a stage of important events, such as the meeting of the first courts, called by D. Afonso III, was the residence of D. Dinis and Queen Santa Isabel, a new court meeting in the reign of D. Fernando and D. João I, celebrated there the marriage of his son D. Afonso, and also launched the works of construction of the new Paço da Rainha.
The castle has irregular polygonal plan, marked by the solidity of its defensive system (walls and towers) in the interior of which stand the Paço Real, the Church of Santa Maria da Pena and the Tower of Menagem.
