At the back of the Government Palace, in the direction of the old neighborhood of San Lázaro, current district of Rímac, is this authentic jewel of colonial architecture. It is a work of hydraulic engineering that has aroused admiration in many for its impeccable line and its solidity.
The author of the project was the mestizo architect from Lima, Fray Jerónimo de Villegas, of the Order of the Augustinians. Its construction began in 1608 and ended two years later. The initiative came from Viceroy Juan de Mendoza y Luna, Marquis of Montesclaros.
Address: behind the Government Palace. 100 meters from the Plaza Mayor. It links the Historic Center with the Rímac district.
In its original design the Stone Bridge was 500 geometric feet long and boasted seven beautiful arches. At present it only shows four arches, the surface is asphalt, it has sidewalks and straight iron railings.
The secret of its solidity and its conservation lies in the care that was put into its construction and in the material used. The pillars on which the arches rest are made of stone from the quarries of Chorrillos.
The material used in the arches consisted of bricks and lime. Until today it is said that for the best preparation of the mortar that was used in the manufacture of the Bridge, the people of Lima came with hundreds of thousands of egg whites.
Time and the erosion of the waters of the Rímac River have forced the authorities to subject the Puente de Piedra to certain repairs. However, despite having lost some details, the Bridge maintains its charm and grace. From there you have an impressive night view of Cerro San Cristóbal.
