Once the city of Huánuco was founded, in the antiplanicie of Huánuco el Viejo a site was designated where the Church dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption or Transit was to be built.
In that pampa the first mass was celebrated in Huanuco territory on August 15, 1539.
Once the Pilco valley was discovered, Fray Pablo de Coimbra celebrated Mass in the open field and near the Huallaga river on a stone that served as an altar, in the same place that today is occupied by the Parroquia de San Cristóbal, the first church built in Huánuco.

Inside it has Baroque-style images carved in wood with plaster faces and hands such as Saint Augustine, The Sorrowful Virgin and the Christ of Malta and the Virgin of the Assumption, Patron Saint of Huánuco, whose anniversary is August 15, date in which the City of Huánuco was founded.
It also conserves in its enclosures a Silver and Iron Chalice that is said to have belonged to Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo and has artistically carved wooden altarpieces gilded in gold leaf.
