Initially, a mother church, Santa Catalina de Alejandría, was built in Moquegua, which was affected time and again by the constant earthquakes that devastated the area. Finally, in August 1868, a terrible earthquake collapsed it and it could not be rebuilt, so the Santo Domingo monastery became a cathedral or mother church.

The Church of Sando Domingo or Cathedral of Moquegua, is located on Calle Ayacucho cdra. 6, the visits are made from Monday to Saturday between 07: 00-12: 00 and 16: 00-19: 00, the contact telephone number is (053) 762011 (053) 762011.
This church is one of the few in the world where a present-body Saint, Santa Fortunata, is venerated, whose remains were exhumed from the Calepodio Catacombs after the 15th century, arriving in Moquegua in 1798.
