Serra do Curral Park was inaugurated on September 08, 2012. It is managed by the Municipal Parks Foundation and managed by the company Construtora BH Forte.
Elected by the population in 1997, symbol of Belo Horizonte, the Serra do Curral is an integral part of Minas Gerais history. In the period of colonization of the state, it was the location reference for travelers.
Founded by the Organic Law of the Municipality and the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN), it is the most representative geographical landmark of the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte. And Serra do Curral Park protects this heritage. Starting at the south gate of Parque das Mangabeiras, passing behind the Hilton Rocha Institute, extending along av. José do Patrocínio Bridges to the State Square of Israel, the Park covers an area of approximately 400 thousand m².
With trails, lookouts and convivial squares, it is space for walking, rest and contemplation. Important tourist point of the Capital, contributes to the protection of the landscape and environmental resources.
Serra do Curral Park has average altitudes ranging from 1,200 to 1,380m. Consisting of a succession of layers of rocks of varied composition, represented by itabirites, dolomites, quartzites, phyllites and various shales, the Park presents typical formation of the set that composes the Quadrilátero Ferrífero.
Flora
The Park is situated in a transitional region between the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado. Its vegetation cover is represented by the rupestrian fields, which occur in the rocky areas of the crest of the mountain range, and mainly by the typical Cerrado physiognomies, such as the clean field, the dirty field and the cerrado field, which gradually follow from the crest to the base. from the mountains. The Atlantic Forest is more expressive in areas adjacent to the Park, such as Parque das Mangabeiras and Mata do Jambreiro, thus constituting an important ecological corridor of preserved vegetation.
Fauna
The fauna of the Park is also quite diverse and the birdlife is the most representative. In it, more than 125 bird species were identified: some endemic to the Cerrado, such as the blue bell, and others common in mountainous regions, such as the Chilean eagle, also found in the Andes Mountains. Carrapateiro, barn owl, black-hatched whitetail and woodcatcher are other species found. In January 2012, the falcon (Falco rufigularis), never before registered in Belo Horizonte, was identified in the park by a group of birdwatchers during a technical visit.
Serra do Curral Park has 10 lookouts, seven along the Travessia da Serra trail. From them, you can see different points of Belo Horizonte: Pampulha Lagoon, Américo Renné Giannetti Municipal Park, Afonso Pena Avenue, Mineirão and Independência Stadiums, UFMG Natural History Museum and Botanical Garden, as well as municipalities such as Nova Lima, Count and Sabará. Itabirito Peak, Serra da Piedade, Pires Hill, Elephant Hill and Serra do Rola-Moça State Park can also be observed.
